IDENTIFYING FACTORS AFFECTING PARTICIPATION

The 3-percent decrease of rounds of golf played between 2001 and 2002 prompted the National Golf Foundation to investigate why usually frequent golfers played less—and what would cause them to resume normal play. Over 1,000 of the game’s best customers were surveyed in June 2003 to answer these questions.

A variety of factors, which differed among demographic groups, contributed to the drop in play. Some of these the industry can influence (such as difficulty getting tee times or trouble finding partners); others the industry cannot (such as the national economy or the player’s health).
