DIVERSE PLAYERS, GREAT INTEREST
Developed for the 2003 GOLF 20/20 conference by the National Golf Foundation the “Minority Golf Participation in the U.S.: African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic-American” was conducted to establish baselines for the measurement of programs like The First Tee and Play Golf America. The study also examined the latent interest in the sport in minority communities.
The research yielded many insights. For example, as many as 14 million total individuals from the groups studied are at least “a little bit” interested in the game. Also, minorities make up about 15 percent of golfers, with African-Americans representing the largest group. Minority participation, as with that of Caucasians, is a function of household income, but minority participants tend to be younger than their white counterparts.
